Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction refers to pain and dysfunction of the jaw.

The TMJ is a bi-arthrodial hinge joint located below your temples on either side of your head. This joint can become inflamed, sore, and dysfunctional.

Common causes of TMJ issues include:

  • Overuse such as excessive chewing
  • Teeth grinding and jaw clenching (often due to stress)
  • Blunt trauma
  • Overstretching (e.g. during dental procedures)

Common signs and symptoms of TMJ issues include:

  • Discomfort or pain in the jaw, especially when eating
  • Aching pain in the front of the ear
  • ‘Locking’ of the jaw making it difficult to open and close your mouth
  • A clicking or grating noise when you open your mouth or chew food
  • Other associated symptoms often include headaches

Helpful strategies to manage TMJ dysfunction include:

  • Manual therapy from your osteopath. This commonly includes hands on techniques working on the muscles around the face, neck, and jaw.
  • Managing your stress levels to prevent teeth grinding or jaw clenching
  • Avoiding excessive use of the jaw (e.g. avoid excessively chewy foods that tire your jaw)
  • Avoid situations where blunt trauma might occur (e.g. contact sports)

Book in with one of our osteopaths today if you are experiencing any of the above symptoms. We will take a thorough history to determine the source of your pain. If dental issues are suspected, we will refer you to your dentist. But if it is clear the pain is stemming from TMJ dysfunction, we can help you manage this condition!
