More and more we seem to find ourselves seated, whether it’s at work, at home, or for transportation we’re spending a lot of time in fixed postures.

Current research suggests that it is not necessarily the posture itself that is the issue but the amount of time we’re spending being immobile. Poor posture or ergonomics is really just exacerbating these issues. Posture and immobility related conditions we see often include:

  • Neck pain
  • Lower back pain -disc injuries, muscle strains and joint sprains
  • Sciatica – lower back, gluteal, and leg pain
  • Headaches – jaw pain and migraines
  • Shoulder pain – muscle strains, postural fatigue, and immobility
  • Elbow tendinopathies – golfer’s elbow, tennis elbow and carpal tunnel

How do Osteopaths manage posture related pain?

At Wellness Osteo we use a multi-faceted approach to manage posture related pain, this often includes manual therapy, equipment recommendations, regular stretching, strength-based rehabilitation, and patient education around specific work related activities. Manual therapy options include;

  • Soft tissue massage, which aims at restoring normal muscle length and aids in lymphatic return
  • Joint mobilisations, which involves taking a joint through it’s active and passive range of motion, this techniques aims to increase the overall range of motion of a joint and decrease pain during movement
  • Dry needling therapy, which involves inserting a fine single use needle into dysfunctional muscle. Dry needling can be used to modify pain and increase muscle length.
  • Rocktape, applications can last for 4 days, it is often used to increase proprioception, improve muscle activation and decrease local swelling.
  • Myofascial release, involves deeper techniques aimed at improving the range of motion of a muscle by addressing the fascia, or covering around a muscle, this is particularly useful in chronic conditions.
  • Functional cupping, involves the application of suction cups during common joint ranges of motion, this can assist in improving flexibility and decreasing pain.

Wellness Osteo is also able to offer online ergonomic assessments to review your current working environment, this includes a written report with practical simple to implement advice of ergonomic devices and activity modification.
