How to Choose the Right Pillow

For those hitting the snooze button one more time you might be interested to know that having the wrong pillow can result in waking with a stiff neck, Headaches first thing in the morning, and interrupted or difficulty getting to sleep. With that in mind here’s some tips for selecting the right pillow for you

Tummy sleepers

Tummy sleeping can be tricky, we often see patients who sleep in this position present with neck and jaw pain. A very flat soft pillow will work well to avoid raising the head too high. Try wool fiber or synthetic cushioning to keep the pillow low. Ensure the composition of your pillow isn’t too dense, you’ll want this to breath well.

Side Sleepers

A firm and reasonably high pillow will work best, ensure that you head is in line with your spine in this position. Try latex or memory foam as they will provide enough support for side sleepers

Back Sleepers

A medium density and medium height pillow will provide enough support without lifting your head up too high. Memory foam works well as it will provide a gentle amount of support.

When to replace your pillow?

Despite some marketing campaigns there’s no simple answer to this, but you should check your pillow after 18 months to ensure it is still providing enough support to keep you head and spine aligned. Materials such as latex and memory foam are more durable and tend to last longer than feather or polyester.
