Headaches! Something we have all suffered from and something nobody enjoys. They can range from annoying to down right debilitating. But did you know there are different types of headaches that have different causes and triggers?

Headaches are one of the most common conditions treated here at Wellness Osteo, and in this blog I will cover the 3 most common types of headaches, what causes them, and how they are treated.

Cervicogenic Headaches:
These headaches are the most common ones that Osteopaths treat!
Presentation – A “Ram’s horn” distribution on one side of your head. Starting from the top of your neck/base of your skull, and curling around the side of your head to behind your eyes. This headache is often described as a constant ache with some throbbing that is relieved when the neck is stretched.
Causes – Tightness and tension in the suboccipital muscles (muscles that sit at the top of your neck/base of your skull), and cervical spinal segments 1-3.
Treatment – After a thorough assessment by one of our Osteopaths, manual handling techniques to release tension from the tight muscles and joints in the neck, accompanied by the prescription of at home stretches have actually been shown to be more effective than pharmaceutical interventions.

Tension Headaches:
These headaches are caused mainly by stress, lack of sleep and poor diet.
Presentation – A tight headband squeeze across the eyebrows, sometimes with associated jaw and temple pain from teeth clenching when we are stressed. These headaches tend to come on suddenly and can last up to several hours.
Treatment – Sleep and hydration are usually the best treatment for these headaches, but falling asleep is not always easy with a throbbing headache! Luckily there are Osteopathic techniques that are targeted at calming down the nervous system and helping you relax. Our Osteopaths can also help educate you on how to improve lifestyle factors, like sleep and diet, that might bring on these types of headaches, making them less likely to occur.

Migraine Headaches:
These headaches can present in a variety of ways. Typically a moderate to severe throbbing headache on one side of the head. They can last anywhere from 4-72 hours and are made worse with physical activity.
1 in 3 migraine sufferers can also be accompanied by an aura. An aura is a set of focal neurological symptoms that precede the headache, usually 30-60 minutes beforehand. These include being sensitive to lights, sounds and certain smells, seeing colours, difficulty speaking, and feeling dizziness and nausea.
Causes – Each migraine sufferer has different triggers that can set them off. The most common are strong odors, certain drinks like red wine, loud noises, hormonal imbalances, and bright flashing lights.
Treatment – It is crucial for Osteopaths to find the triggers to your migraines, to help you avoid them. Then perform safe and gentle hands on techniques to try and relieve any tension in your body. This will reduce the intensity and frequency of these attacks, and help you sleep off these headaches.
