Posture Problems

With technology having an ever increasing influence in our day to day activities it’s not surprising that postural imbalances can strongly influence our body and overall health. Long days and poor posture can result in several issues including chronic back and shoulder pain, neck stiffness and headaches. Ergonomic changes can assist in postural correction allowing the body to naturally align in a more efficient and comfortable position.

Here are 10 tips to improve your posture

  • Keep both feet flat on the floor, or slightly under you chair

  • Ensure your hips are slightly higher than your knees, most office chairs now have a tilt function to facilitate this

  • A lumbar roll or support can be used against the lower back for extra support

  • Keep your shoulders relaxed, do not slump forward

  • Keep your elbows close to your waist, bend the elbow so the arm and forearm are at a 90-degree angle, ensure the mouse is close and you are not reaching forward

  • Keep the keyboard at a height so that your wrists are straight

  • The screen should be at eye height and directly in front of you, this is often difficult with laptops so a second key board placed lower than the screen may help

  • Ensure you have proper lighting over your keyboard and that it isn’t reflecting off your screen

  • The head should sit directly over the body, chin tucked in slightly with the ears over the shoulders.

  • Get up and move around every hour!
