Sciatica - a holistic approach

Sciatica is a term we hear a lot at Wellness Osteo, but what exactly is sciatica and more importantly what can we do about it?

Sciatica refers to any condition that causes irritation of the sciatic nerve, the large nerve that supplies the leg with all its sensory and motor information. Compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve can result in a variety of symptoms including;

  • Intense pain in the lower back, buttock, and leg

  • Numbness or altered sensation

  • Muscle weakness

  • Trouble walking

  • Local swelling

In terms of treating sciatica, it all depends on what is causing that sciatic nerve irritation. A thorough physical examination (and sometimes imaging / tests) is needed to accurately determine the cause of the sciatic nerve irritation as this will dictate the most effective way to approach treating this condition. In this sense sciatica is more of an umbrella term for an entire group of conditions that cause compression of the sciatic nerve, these include:

  • Disc herniation

  • Spinal canal narrowing

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Inflammation

  • Trauma

  • Infection

As there are several causes of sciatica a tailored treatment approach that addresses not only the cause of your sciatica but also the predisposing factors will work best. A variety of manual therapy techniques can aid in symptomatic relief, this may include soft tissue massage and taping to address local inflammation, dry needling for decreasing pain, and joint mobilisation for increasing range of motion.  In addition to manual therapy, understanding what is causing your pain makes a huge difference in how to manage it, this is where ongoing patient education is so important. The final component is rehabilitation, getting you moving and keeping you strong, with a focus on returning you to what is most important (football, playing with the kids, getting back to work). This multifaceted approach is what makes Wellness Osteo a more holistic choice, considering more than just the biomechanical factors to health and incorporating them into all aspects of your life.
