All About Neck Pain

Neck pain affects the global population at a rate of between 30 – 50% annually. It’s no wonder that neck pain is our most commonly treated condition at Wellness Osteo. Neck pain and headaches are something we really enjoy treating, having a patient finally realise that it’s not normal to be in pain on a daily basis is a big win for us.


When treating neck pain we start by taking a thorough history of your neck pain, this helps us to start determining what has caused the pain but also what goals you might like to achieve when returning to normal activity. Common causes of neck pain include:

  • Muscle strains

  • Joint sprains

  • Disc injuries

  • Nerve impingement

  • Arthritis

  • Postural imbalances

  • Headaches

  • Jaw pain


We then look at your posture and how you move via a physical examination to confirm the cause of your pain, this may include range of motion tests, functional tests, orthopaedic tests, and a neurological examination. Once complete your Osteopath will discuss your prognosis (neck pain plan) with you, this will include the cause of your pain (working diagnosis), treatment options and whether referral may be needed, education on activity modification and or ergonomics, and finally an individual rehabilitation plan to focused on achieving your goals.

Once we have discussed what is causing your neck pain and out plan to treat it, we then set about using a wide variety of manual therapy technique, these techniques may include;

  • soft tissue massage

  • joint mobilisations

  • dry needling therapy

  • rocktape

  • myofascial release

  • functional cupping

  • lymphatic drainage


We’ll finish up by retesting the regions tested prior to treatment to gauge any change in the tissues. We then summarise your management plan to ensure that your go home understanding how we plan on managing your neck pain together.
