What happens in an Osteo consult?

Not sure what to expect in your first Osteopathic consult at Wellness Osteo? Keep reading as we take you through the usual steps involved as a new patient.

Prior to your first osteopathic consultation you’ll receive and SMS form, this is used a screening tool to review your medical history. Once you have arrived, you’ll meet your Oseopath, we start by taking a thorough history of your pain, this helps us to start determining what has caused the pain but also what goals you might like to achieve when returning to normal activity.

We then look at your posture and how you move via a physical examination to confirm the cause of your pain, this may include range of motion tests, functional tests, orthopaedic tests, and a neurological examination.

Once complete, your Osteopath will discuss your prognosis (plan for management) with you, this will include the cause of your pain (working diagnosis), treatment options and whether referral may be needed, education on activity modification and or ergonomics, and finally an individual rehabilitation plan to focused on achieving your goals.

Once we have discussed what is causing your pain and how we plan to treat it, we then set about using a wide variety of manual therapy techniques, these techniques may include;

–          soft tissue massage

–          joint mobilisations

–          dry needling therapy

–          rocktape

–          myofascial release

–          functional cupping

–          lymphatic drainage

We’ll finish up by retesting the regions tested prior to treatment to gauge the change in the tissues. We then summarise your management plan to ensure that your go home understanding how we plan on managing your pain together.
